Search behaviour is changing.
People no longer discover information only by clicking through traditional search results. Some research now happens through Google’s AI features, Gemini, ChatGPT and other generative AI systems.
As a result, terms such as GEO — Generative Engine Optimization and AEO — Answer Engine Optimization are becoming more common.
Does GEO replace SEO as a completely new discipline?
The short answer is:
No.
In 2026, Google published new guidance for generative AI search and explicitly stated that established SEO best practices remain foundational for visibility in Google Search’s generative AI features.

What is GEO?
GEO is commonly used to describe work that helps a brand or its content become discoverable, understandable, contextualised and trustworthy enough to be evaluated by generative search systems.
A traditional SEO question might be:
“Where do we rank for this keyword?”
Generative search adds another question:
“When someone asks about our industry, can the system correctly understand our brand and content?”
This does not make rankings irrelevant. It simply means search visibility is becoming broader than a single position in a traditional results page.
Is SEO becoming obsolete?
No.
Expecting strong AI-search visibility from a site with weak technical SEO is unrealistic.
If crawlers cannot access your content, pages cannot be indexed, important information only exists inside inaccessible client-side interactions or the site does not clearly explain what it offers, generative systems do not magically solve those problems.
The foundation still includes crawlability, indexability, clear site architecture, understandable content structure, technical quality, internal linking, mobile experience and meaningful titles and headings.
Why “add one GEO file and you are done” is not enough
Whenever a new field becomes popular, shortcuts appear.
It can be tempting to believe that one file, one schema markup block or a few new meta tags will solve the entire problem.
But for a system to understand a brand, the brand’s real digital presence needs to be clear.
For example:
- Who is the company?
- What does it do?
- Which services does it actually provide?
- Where does it have real experience?
- Which projects demonstrate that experience?
- Where does it operate?
- Which website and social profiles are official?
If those answers are inconsistent or unclear, technical markup alone cannot create a strong entity signal.
Useful, original content still matters
Google’s people-first content guidance continues to emphasise useful, reliable and original information created primarily for people.
Important questions include whether the content simply repeats what others already published, whether it includes real experience or analysis, whether the reader actually gets a useful answer, whether it was produced primarily to attract search traffic, and whether the topic is genuinely connected to the site’s expertise.

Make your content answerable
Content that works well for generative systems is often simply better content for people.
For example:
“We provide SEO services.”
contains very little useful information.
A stronger service page can answer what happens in technical SEO, which problems are solved, how local SEO differs from broader SEO, which businesses the service suits and what the process looks like.
That turns the page from keyword-focused marketing copy into an actual information resource.
Why case studies are becoming more valuable
The web already contains thousands of generic statements such as “SEO improves visibility” or “AI improves efficiency”.
Real project experience is much less common.
Information about what problem existed, what was developed, which systems were integrated and why the project used a particular architecture shows that a company has actually worked in the field rather than simply publishing content about it.
Brand and entity consistency
A brand becomes harder to understand when different platforms contain conflicting information.
Important information should remain consistent across the digital ecosystem:
- company or brand name
- official website
- phone number
- address
- services
- social profiles
- Google Business Profile
This becomes particularly important for local visibility.
What does structured data contribute?
Structured data can help search engines understand entities and content types on a page.
Examples include Organization, Service, BreadcrumbList and Article.
But structured data does not replace real page content.
Adding services that do not exist on the page, inventing reviews or marking up information that is not true is not a legitimate GEO strategy.
Accessibility for AI crawlers
Another fundamental requirement is accessibility.
Important information should be available in accessible HTML, managed through a deliberate robots policy, not hidden behind unnecessary technical barriers, and presented in a structure that both people and crawlers can understand.
Again, this is where SEO and GEO overlap rather than operate as separate worlds.
What does GEO mean for local businesses?
For local businesses, the website is only part of the picture.
The Google Business Profile and other local entity information also matter.
Important signals include category, service area, address, reviews, descriptions and website.
These should be consistent with each other.

Can GEO be measured?
There is no single universal “GEO ranking”.
Generative systems can produce different answers depending on the query, context, model, location and time.
Measurement therefore needs to be broader:
- organic search visibility
- branded search
- referral traffic
- traffic from AI features
- brand mentions
- Search Console data
- conversion quality
That is why promises such as “we will rank you number one in ChatGPT” are not credible.
What does a healthy GEO strategy look like?
We do not treat GEO as an isolated hack that replaces SEO.
A more sustainable model is:

Entity and brand consistency

Search + generative AI visibility
Google’s 2026 generative AI guidance reinforces the same idea: there is no secret new optimisation trick that replaces good SEO foundations.
So the first question should not be:
“What do we need to add for AI?”
It should be:
“How clearly and reliably can both people and machines understand our business and our digital presence today?”
